In Year 1, we are looking forward to exploring some exciting themes across our curriculum. In Literacy we will be learning all about the golden age of piracy and thinking about the lives of some famous pirates like Blackbeard. We will also read the picture book The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch by David and Ronda Armitage, which is rich in vocabulary and a text we hope will inspire the children’s writing. In Science, we will find out about animals and their habitats. We will also learn about plants and how they grow. In Geography we will explore our country and the wider world by looking at maps, and in History, we will learn about significant explorers across the ages. Continuing our theme on pirates, we will be making a pirate inspired sculpture in our Art lessons, and will be designing and making a pirate lunch box in DT. We are also hoping to have a ‘Pirate Day’ to celebrate our learning later in the term. More details to follow.
Please continue to read with your child as often as possible and continue practising their weekly spellings with them ready for their spelling tests on Wednesday mornings. In June, we have our Year 1 Phonics Screen Check. Please continue encouraging your child to practice using their phonic skills to read the weekly word lists we are sending home.
Also, just a reminder that we now have PE on Thursday afternoons. Please remember to send your child in to school with a PE kit on this day. If your child has their ears pierced, could you please either remove them before school or provide plasters to cover them with.
What an exciting final term we have to look forward to in Year 1!
