Year 6 Spring Blog

Posted in Year 6 on January 6, 2026

Year 6 have a very busy spring term. In school, we will be working hard to continue to meet the challenging expectations for all Year 6 pupils across the country in reading, writing, grammar and maths.

This term in geography, we will study the natural phenomena: mountains and volcanoes. Looking at where they are in the world, how they are formed and different types and find out about famous climbers who have conquered mountains.

In history, we will be focusing on World War 2, looking at how Britain managed during the war, the Battle of Britain, leaders Winston Churchill and Hitler and Anne Frank’s life.

In English, we are reading “Kensuke’s Kingdom” by Michael Morpurgo and imagining what it might be like to be stranded on a desert island. What are the arguments for and against sailing off around the world and leaving your normal, everyday life behind?

In Maths, our Spring topics are Ratio, Algebra, Decimals and Percentages. You can use My Maths at home to support these topics.

Our new Science topic is Animals including Humans, where we will be looking at how our circulation and digestive systems work and the importance that diet and exercise have in staying healthy.

PE will be street dance and fitness circuits. P.E will continue to be on a Tuesday.

In Art, our new topic is Brave Colour. Where we explore how humans we react emotionally to colour. Artists that create immersive environments using colour and light. Trying new colour combinations and exploring the relationship between colour and form and to use our imagination and share our vision with others by creating 2 and 3 dimensional models.

In Spanish, we are looking at the topic: Do you have a pet? Where we will be learning new vocabulary to be able to answer this question, through reading, writing, speaking and listening activities. In ICT, we are being data detectives and learning how to sort and filter databases to find relevant information.

Of course, we will still be preparing for SATs with extra grammar, reading and arithmetic sessions and doing practice tests so we are ready for May. Please continue to support your child’s reading, spellings and times tables at home: it really does make a huge difference to their progress.
