Welcome back!
Year 4 are finishing our fantastic Vikings topic. The children have loved finding out about the invasions and how the Vikings changed Britain. Our next topic will be Geography – Latitude & Longitude. We will identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones. We will also use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world. Use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies.
During our literacy lessons, we will be looking at the epic poem Beowulf and writing about it using various types of poetry and trying to recreate our own. Then we will use the Tinga Tales (African fables) to inspire us to write our own fables.
Children should continue to read at home to an adult at least 5 times per week. Each parent signature in the diary counts as one step up the reading ladder and counts towards our class reading percentage each week. Children will continue to read a range of genres to earn their silver reading band which needs to be completed by the Easter holidays. (See the silver reading letter sent home or ask your child’s class teacher for more information).
Please remember to keep practising spellings and times tables each week. We are working towards all children knowing their times tables to 12×12 reading for the Times table check.
Mr Scott will continue his ukulele teaching sessions on Tuesday’s please keep working on those chords.
